Huskers Open Big Ten Tournament Thursday Against Illinois

The Nebraska women’s basketball team opens play in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament by taking on Illinois on Thursday in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Tip-off between the Huskers and the Fighting Illini at Sears Centre Arena is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska closed the Big Ten regular season by winning three of its last five games including its most complete effort of the year with a 74-50 run past Minnesota. The Huskers suffered a 78-60 loss to Big Ten Tournament No. 3 seed Ohio State on Senior Day.

Emily Cady and Brandi Jeffery closed their home careers at Nebraska with double-doubles, including 21 points and 13 rebounds for Cady. It was Cady’s 11th double-double of the season and 33rd of her career. She earned second-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season.  Jeffery notched the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists.

Tear’a Laudermill added honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades for the Huskers, while Hailie Sample was named Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

Illinois earned the No. 10 seed at the Big Ten Tournament by winning three of its last five games, including a 72-60 victory over Michigan. The Illini also notched a one-point win at No. 14 seed Purdue and a 66-55 win over third-seeded Ohio State.

Although Illinois managed just a 6-12 Big Ten mark, the Illini claimed conference wins over tournament No. 2 seed Iowa, No. 3 seed Ohio State and No. 6 seed Minnesota - all by double digits.

However, the Fighting Illini dropped both of their regular-season meetings to Nebraska.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Illinois 8-3, including a sweep of this season’s series and four straight wins against the Illini overall.

“We’re a whole lot different with Ivory Crawford on the floor,” coach Matt Bollant said. “She makes big plays. She just does a lot of little things for us, and we don’t have great depth, so taking out your star player makes a big difference.”

Now, the tables will be turned in Illinois’ favor. Rachel Theriot, who leads the Cornhuskers with 16.5 points per game this season, will not be playing due to injury.

“In the two games we played (Nebraska) over the 80 minutes, we probably led for 75, so I think that gives us some confidence,” Bollant said. “Theriot is out as well, so those things make a difference.”

For White, playing Nebraska for a third time will provide extra momentum. White, an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten player and member of the Big Ten All-Freshman team, is a native of Shelby, Nebraska.

“We’re so ready to play them, that’s my home state and we’re ready to get after it,” White said.

The Illini will also enter the tournament knowing they’ve been competitive with — or beaten — most of the teams in their half of the bracket. “We’re very excited about the side of the bracket we’re on and who we’re playing first,” redshirt junior guard Kyley Simmons said. “The season’s been so fast, and I don’t think anybody on this team is ready to be completely done.” That being said, Bollant isn’t thinking too far ahead. “I feel good about our draw, but at the same time, if we’re thinking about anyone other than Nebraska, we’re not real intelligent,” he said. “All our focus and all our energy ... that’s all I’ve thought about since we won on Saturday and knew we were playing them.”

Prediction: Illinois 62, Nebraska 58

Enough is different about this third matchup between the Illini and the Cornhuskers that a different outcome is not out of the question. Illinois led for the bulk of the game the first time the teams met this season, but being outscored 11-2 in the final 51/2 minutes saw Nebraska pull off the come-from-behind win. On the road just more than two weeks later, the Illini held the lead for 38 minutes, 49 seconds. Again, a stalled offense did them in. That changes with Crawford on the court. She’s the team’s best playmaker. If they need offense late in the game, she can deliver. Nebraska playing without its own offensive leader will also make a difference. Nebraska might have the veteran advantage with four seniors and three starters back from last year’s Big Ten tournament champion team. Illinois has just as much to play for. “This game means a heck of a lot. That’s for sure,” Grant said. “We’re definitely going to come ready to play and have a little extra fire in us for this game. It’s for all the marbles.”
