Scouting Michigan St

The Good (for us)

- They've been shooting as poorly as us from the FT line during conference play and they weren't shooting better before the non-con. Statistically the worst FT shooting team in the conference. Branden Dawson is shooting 42% during the season and during conference

- Majority of their scoring is in the paint and 3pt percentage has been 34% in conference..fits into what we want to do - Denzel Valentine has been ice cold from long range

- They're not going to force pressure/try to turn us over. They also run a pack style defense.

The Bad

- They typically own the boards...both offensively and defensively. Dawson, Costello and Schilling gobble up rebounds.

- They're a high assist team. Our defense requires you to pass and they're used to it.

- Penn St slowed them down playing zone.  That's not our thing.

- Very physical team...they don't have a player over 6'9" but a lot of guys 5 guys ranging from 6'5" 220 to 6'9" 245 who play a lot of minutes. You would need to pair Leslee/Moses with Pitchford and Shields to equal that type of size.

Losses this year...all very good teams except for Texas Southern

  • Duke
  • Kansas
  • Notre Dame
  • Texas Southern !!!!
  • Maryland
  • Maryland

A down year for Tom Izzo is this team that would have to collapse pretty hard to not make the tourney. The #1 key to winning this game is protecting the offensive glass at all costs as the Huskers will struggle to win if outshot by 10+ attempts.  This is a winnable game against a vulnerable Michigan St team that is 4-5 in games decided by 10 or less and 9-1 in all other games.

Last but certainly not least, #AveryStrong

- Obviously nothing but good things to say about Mich St. and Izzo

- Need to make a run with Mich St and Michigan

- This isn't church...stand up and be loud

- Tarin has 6'5" length....potentially could start at some point

- Numbers say 8 of the last 12 games are projected within two possessions. What do we need to do to close out/win those games?

- Thinks this is a special defensive team

- Problem with the fast break/press offense is a lot of guys who are "one-directional drivers"...guys who beat you with speed as opposed to changing in multiple directions.

- 2 guys on the rim at all time - should see Leslee more in this game

You'll need to cheer loudly for me today, guys.  I'll be on the road for much of it (have to call another high school game today).

How 'bout calling in sick instead? ;)

I probably could.  Going to be sniffing a lot of snot on the broadcast today!
