Player Dust-Ups

Last night's Hurricane dust-ups are a reminder of one highly valuable part of the Tim Miles administration: Tim Miles is a high character person who attracts high character assistant coaches, recruits high character players, and enforces high character behavior.

Take, for example, last season's dust-up between Petteway and a Bluejay. Even though the Bluejay acted as the aggressor, Petteway apologized to his team. Miles made that apology public and said something like, "That's not what we are about." By contrast, the Bluejay coach stood in public support of his aggressor-player.

According to the Miami Herald, the Miami coach praised his players' effort and intensity in the dust-ups context, although he said they can't be getting those penalties. One of their players reportedly expressed pride in the team for standing together, even if that meant penalties. Such explanations are how a team obtains, and then justifies having, a reputation as "Thug U."

Here is pretty close to a quote from Tim Miles on behavior issues: "In the end, you get what you tolerate."

Tim Miles is a wise man. He will undoubtedly have his share of player problems in the future--that's an inevitability--but he is doing this the right way!!! That's something to be proud of!

Terran apologizing was huge for a million reasons.  At that point in the season, I for one, still questioned whether he was selfish or good.  I knew his reputation from Tech.  I didn't know what to think.  The dude has shined in a positive environment imo.

Watch Nebraska's game over again last night.  Ameer/Bell/Westerkamp...the ones called out on twitter were the ones quickest to give helmet pats and pick other players up.

Don't get me wrong.  I want to see my team win.  At the same time, looking at the big picture, it's nice to see players show sportsmanship.

Keep it clean, keep it classy...and WIN.

WE WILL WIN.

I gotta confess, that image of a Nebraska player on his back, far from any action, with two Hurricanes on top of him, holding him down, trying to hurt him is one of the most revolting and offensive things I've ever witnessed on a football field. Inexcusable. Indefensible. That the Miami coach and players tried to spin it positively speaks volumes about them.

Football and basketball are two different animals. Both perceptions of players and the amount of damage that can be done are tremendously different when helmets are not worn. Just ask Kermit Washington and Rudy Tomjanavich about that one. Therefore we should not question Bo for not making players apologize and should praise Tim for doing just that. And, by the way, isn't Walt everyone's favorite time of year??

Wrong, Silverback. And since you were the only one to hazard a guess, I'll let the Walt out of the bag. Walter Wesley. Played center at KU 1963-6 with a 9 year pro career. I always enjoyed watching the pregame warmup in the day when dunks were not punished. Before going to the locker room, the team would all line up and make one last dunk (if able). Walt always was the finisher with a magnificent two handed throwdown as the team left the court to a standing ovation. He was listed as 6'11" but played as 7'4" if you counted the fro.
